Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®)

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is used to help team members understand themselves and the relationship of their preferences to the way they and other team members interact.  The MBTI is the best known and most widely used assessment for understanding individual differences, and has been used for more than 50 years.  More than two million assessments are administered to individuals annually, and it is available in 21 languages.

In their introduction to Introduction to Type and Teams, Elizabeth, Katherine and Sandra Hirsh speak about the MBTI as a tool “useful to teams because it is based on the idea that we all have unique gifts to offer and challenges to overcome.”  They later go on to say that an understanding of type “will assist you in getting to know yourself as a team member by highlighting your contribution to team functioning, identifying ways you may irritate others and others may irritate you, and targeting ways you can maximize your effectiveness.”
